There are a lot of excuses as to why we can’t make it to the gym, but why are we letting our excuses get in the way of our health and fitness goals? It’s hard to be motivated and committed to our workouts 100 percent of the time! Sometimes life gets in the way, and that’s ok, but there is a huge difference between life circumstances and excuses that breed procrastination.

The key for long-term sustainability is not about having excuses, but not letting the excuses set you back from where you want to be.

Here are four common excuses for not getting to the gym and what you can do to beat them.

I’m Too Tired

This is probably the most common excuse. Why? Well, because we ARE tired…working full-time, taking care of kids, cooking, driving and all the other day to day responsibilities wear us out – I get it!

I know this sounds counter-intuitive, but a kickass workout is the BEST way combat that tired feeling. Your workout will actually energize you, reverse that dragging feeling and kick in those good endorphins that will keep you going to give you a boost.

I often hear this excuse early on in someone’s training. I promise if you keep at it your body will actually get used to working out and even prime your body with the right hormones to get in the gym and crush your goals.

I Don’t Have Time

Another really common excuse is that we just run out of time in the day. Any portion of your day spent doing a workout, even an abridged one, is better than none! It’s completely ok if you are really slammed and it is hard to get into the gym. But doing a shorter more intense workout is much better than not working out at all.

Make the most of your time in the gym, too. Shorten rest periods, stay off your phone, and talk a little less during training. Do you realize a one-hour workout only takes up 4 percent of your day?

Lots of Jessie’s Girls get up at 4 A.M. and make sure they just get that workout in because they know it’s the ONLY time all day it’s going to work. You can always find time to focus on your priorities – so if living a happy and healthy life is one of them, then finding time to get in the gym shouldn’t be hard to come by.

Something Always Comes up

This will happen, of course, things come up that prevent us from our day going as planned. This is where pre-planning and flexibility comes in. Do you have a pre-workout meal with you that you can eat on the run? Can you switch your morning workout to the evening for one day? Most things that come up should be able to be modified so that your workout is not interrupted for more than a day.
